I finally got my account back up and logged in to find something that did not exist when my account was created.
I am a little curious about world selection, as it applies to existing characters. When I click the world selection tab, it brings up the full world list, with my current world noted at top. There are two tabs at the bottom of the list labeled Guest and Transfer.
These questions may sound a little stupid, but I do not want to click them unless I have a clear understanding of exactly what they do.
Does the Transfer tab allow me to permanently relocate my character to another world, without cost or detriment to my character?
Does the Guest tab allow me to hop to another world to play with friends, and then back again?

So, since a new SUPER BIG update, it's all one megaserver with overflows, so it's all one server, except for the Server vs. Server and Edge of the Mists, which is all of the servers mashed together. Transferring does not cost your character, but it costs you. P: It costs some gems, but I'm not sure exactly hoowww much. Guesting allows you to go to that server for 24 hours, but you cant participate in WvW or EotM, so it's basically useless. This feature is totally free.
I hope this clears things up!

Sort of. WvW and EotM are also new from since I was last on, but I'll get the hang of it. I'm also tempted to just start over, but I'll at least give this current character a spin to relearn the controls with, and who knows, maybe I'll hold onto her I am Human Elementalist, Lunarie Littlenymph, on Henge of Denravi.

Worlds will no longer matter for PvE, as it's on a megaserver (as Spencer said).
While I am not on HoD, I know some that are and hopefully you enjoy WvW over there, but that would be the only disadvantage.
Transfering does automatically switch servers/paid for it. Guesting allows you to guest onto other servers for PvE only.

When I first got the game I went on Henge of Denravi because that's where Zadira, Stephani, Ravix, Tye Swordprince, and pretty much everyone else I knew that played it was at. Sadly, I did not play it long enough to get any of them on my friends list before I got distracted onto other things, and then became unable to play at all.
Generally when I see a game combine servers, or diminish the total number of servers offered, it is due to a winding down of participants, but that does not seem to be the motivation behind what the devs at GW2 are up to. I guess I have some catching up to do. Time to hit the official sites to see if I can get a grasp on what the current status and future direction of the game is.
I actually do not know how many friends I have at this point that play actively, or where they are located. Perhaps we should generate a list... or something...

You can view your friends, or contacts in this case, by either pressing the Y hotkey, or pressing the icon with three little people in the upper left hand corner of your screen. You can then hit the tab following to see who YOU are following (which is the automatic tab for you), and then go to the tab on the side of that panel and press the one that says followers; those are the people following YOU! You can right-click on their name, and add as a friend if you want, but don't have too. My account name is Joseph.9853, and I did just follow you so I am there if you need me!

You can see this on your character select screen in the upper right hand corner as soon as you log in to play (like be loaded in game to select your character), or you can press the Y hotkey to show you your contacts and it'll show you at the top of the panel that pops up. =)
