I would just as soon read a book as play a game. I would just as soon play a game as watch a movie. I much prefer a good movie to most anything on television. Combine that with the everyday things any person has to squeeze into the average 24 hours and it becomes rather obvious that only a small portion of the time I spend on entertainment is in front of a TV set. It is, in fact, something of a rare thing to find something that sparks my interest. Last week I happened to stumble across one of those things, Imaginary Mary.
Imaginary Mary is about a successful business-woman that leads a satisfying and productive life before it gets thrown into uncharted territory after meeting and becoming involved with a divorced father with three kids. The stress from dealing with a relationship she never imagined conjures up her long forgotten, imaginary, childhood friend [Mary] who takes it upon herself to guide her old friend through these troubling times with an endless stream of disastrous advice.
In a nutshell, it reminds me somewhat of the old TV series, ALF. If you liked ALF [provided you are old enough to recall it] you will probably like this series as well. The major difference is that ALF was main-line family entertainment, while Imaginary Mary has a greater focus on the more mature theme of adult relationships... with kids. The main thing these shows have in common, though, is they are both hilarious.
One thing that causes me to avoid TV series in general is the fact that time restraints make it difficult for me to keep up with an on-going series. So far I have managed to catch the pilot and opening episode for this show, and I'm already hooked. Most shows generally take a while to build, but if this one continues in the same fashion that it began, I'll be doing my best to keep up with it. It shows in my area on Tuesday night at 9:30, but check with your local ABC affiliate to see when it shows in your area. If you like witty, off-beat humor, you will not regret giving it a try.
