Wednesday has no use for an iPod or whatever it is that people put music on these days. What would be the point when my head is already full of beautiful sounds like the howling of wolves and the gentle patter of rain on a freshly turned grave.
Sadly, you can not see in my head for that is not your purpose in life. How fortunate for you that getting into YOUR head happens to be one of the many skills I inherited from my dear Mama.
So what perhaps would one find on my playlist if I happened to have one? Let's find out. One song, one day at a time, from now through All-Hallows-Eve. Should I miss a day due to Mayhem, I will make up for it the next time I post but, I promise you 31 of the world's most beautiful songs by midnight of the 31st, and Wednesday always keeps her promises, with the exception of those times that she does not.
Let the Mayhem begin.

#01: "Come Little Children" From the movie "Hocus Pocus". [sometimes listed as "Sally's Song"]. Written by James Horner.Vocals: Alida Bonifaz Piano: Rodrick BorbonPosted by Alida Bonifaz @ You TubeFree download at: soundcloud.com/alidabon/come-little-children-cover
Sarah is one of the most underappreciated witches of all time. Okay, sure, she was a little perky for my tastes but, the lady was really into her job. A lot of people would not be that good at sucking the souls from innocent children in order to fuel their immortality but, this lady has that can do attitude that makes a witch excel in all she does. If you are fortunate enough to really love your job, as Sarah and I do, the work becomes little more than a game. Games are fun, right?
#02: "Mordred's Lullaby" Written and performed by Heather Dale, from her CD "Avalon". mp3 and CD available at iTunes or at heatherdale.com/
For those that did not connect this with the popular folk tale of motherly affection, the story is thus, Mordred LeFay is the son of King Arthur and Arthur's half sister, Morgana. I guess they liked to keep personal affairs in the family back then but, I digress... Mordred's mother, Morgan LeFay, teaches him from cradle to grave that his father, Arthur, has stolen the throne from her... errr... him. Supposedly Morgan had her reasons but, who am I to judge how a mother bestows her affections. From Morgans perspective it is up to Mordred to assume the role of dutiful son and restore the throne to its proper heir, at all costs, even if that cost be death, preferably Arthurs. What better gift in keeping with the spirit of All-Hallows-Eve than the gift of murder and ultimate sacrifice and, what greater act of motherly affection than to manipulate ones offspring into pursuing a destiny that meets mommy's approval? If I knew how to cry, it might bring a tear to my eye.
#03: "Thorns" by Rachel Rose Mitchell The second track from the album "HEART OF MINE". rachelrosemitchell.net/
Ahhh... Thorns and Romance, Romance and Thorns. So much alike that it is hard to tell where one leaves off and the other begins. Romance is sooo complicated.
#04: "Calling All Guitars" Emily and the Strangers The artwork and literature for Emily The Strange is a creation of Rob Reger, and, can be viewed HERE (commercial link).
"The Premiere animation and music video for Emily and the Strangers' "Calling All Guitars" video. Meet her band, and watch Emily use her imagination and inventions to take it to the stage." ~ emilythe13th
Emily is a favorite childhood character of mine and should be introduced to any young girl whom is to be brought up in proper Goth fashion. Sadly, this particular video falls a little short of the goth, morose, laid back style that I have come to expect from one of my favorite comic characters but, I'll give it a pass for the black cats and dark style. I suppose even the best of us can't avoid being upbeat from time to time.
#5: "Walking With Strangers" By The Birthday Massacre
Hmmm... what an interesting thought, as the kiddies don their cute little costumes and venture out into the streets. Don't walk with strangers kids! Be safe. Take my hand. Go ahead...... TAKE IT!
Look around for a means to dissuade her attention. Can't remember the places and names that she mentions.
My words are falling apart in spite of me. I'm stepping out of the light so she can't see. Don't think I'll miss her, But I want to take her picture When I found a place Where she can't find me.
And she's falling asleep as she's walking with strangers. Talking cheap as the flies on the wall entertain her.
Her world is falling apart in front of me. She's stepping into the light, but she can't see. It's hard to miss her when she's posing for a picture, But I found a place where she can't find me.
My words are falling apart in spite of me. I'm stepping out of the light so she can't see. Don't think I'll miss her, But I want to take her picture When I found a place Where she can't find me.
#06: "This Is Halloween" From the movie "The Nightmare Before Christmas".
Seriously? You can't post a Halloween song list without sticking this instant classic in there somewhere, right? I'm pretty sure it's mandatory.
#07: "Science Fiction Double Feature" Opening credits to "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".
Arguably one of the worst sci-fi horror flicks of all time but, I really like this song. I actually wanted to post Eddie's Teddy, from the same production but, could not find a "clean" copy that contained the original soundtrack. Something a lot of people do not know about this track is what makes it truly, deliciously, horrible. And that is...... It's sung by a guy. Yup, that's a dude, my friends. But take heart, those that may have been a little ...infatuated. The actual lips are from a female errr... lip double.
Ahhh... yes. That awkward moment when you realize this song is sung by Richard O'Brien (the director; Riff Raff). Those luscious red lips in the background, however, belong to none other than Patricia Quinn (Magenta).
~.~ Lyrics ~.~

Speaking of that iconic (despite how horrible it was), 1975 cult classic, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", I would be remiss to not include what is probably the best known, most played song from that movie. It's the visuals, however, that have made this song a Halloween classic for the past 40+ years.
Let's join Riff-Raff and Magenta as they show a reluctant Brad and Janet how to do the Time Warp...
#08: "Time Warp" Scene w/ Lyrics, from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". Music: "The Time Warp (Remix 1989 Extended Version)" by Richard O'Brien, Patricia Quinn, Little Nell
Frankly, I find "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" to be bizarre, even by MY standards. From the concept, story line, and all the way down to the costuming itself. That said, I can't argue with it's continued success and, I'm not always the best authority on matters of style, including that of costuming.
#09: "Thriller" By Michael Jackson Thriller video version from Michael Jackson's Immortal Cirque du Soleil.
In poll after poll, this Michael Jackson hit comes in #1 as the best Halloween song of all time. While I'm not certain it belongs in the top spot after all these years, I have to admit it certainly belongs on any All-Hallows-Eve playlist.
#10: "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" By Blue Oyster Cult
"(Don't Fear) The Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult is selected by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the Top 500 rock songs of all time. The song is about Death's inevitability, and his personification as the Grim Reaper, but also about premature death, suicide and eternal love ("Romeo and Juliet are together in eternity"). The song and the album it appeared on, "Agents Of Fortune," came out in time for Halloween, 1976. In October 1978, "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" would enter the world of cinema as the rock song playing on the car radio being driven through the town of Haddonfield, Illinois by Annie Brackett (Nancy Kyes) with her friend Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) in the unforgettable film classic "Halloween".

Good night, sleep tight...... "with one eye open... Gripping your pillow tight..." #12: Enter Sandman By Metallica
~.~ Lyrics ~.~
Say your prayers little one Dont forget, my son To include everyone
Tuck you in, warm within Keep you free from sin Till the sandman he comes
Sleep with one eye open Gripping your pillow tight
Exit light Enter night Take my hand Off to never never land
Somethings wrong, shut the light Heavy thoughts tonight And they arent of snow white
Dreams of war, dreams of liars Dreams of dragons fire And of things that will bite
Sleep with one eye open Gripping your pillow tight
Exit light Enter night Take my hand Off to never never land
Now I lay me down to sleep Pray the lord my soul to keep If I die before I wake Pray the lord my soul to take
Hush little baby, dont say a word And never mind that noise you heard Its just the beast under your bed, In your closet, in your head
Exit light Enter night Grain of sand
Exit light Enter night Take my hand Were off to never never land
#13: "Bark at the Moon" By Ozzy Osbourne
Is it just me or, does it seem somehow appropriate that the Oz Man would wind up being lucky 13? Not that there is any order to these things. I'm just saying...... #14: Sympathy for the Devil - (Lyrics) By The Rolling Stones Lyrics by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
"Pleased to meet you."
It's another two for one special on the Halloween edition of The Wednesday Playlist. "My Jolly Sailor Boy", full edition, with lyrics. Before we hear this old tune though, let's take a look at the scene from "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" that brought this tune back from antiquity, and made it horror-worthy enough to be included on a Halloween play list. And best of all... it's free, Free, FREE!
#15a: My Jolly Sailor Bold [Sometimes listed as "The Mermaid Song"] Scene from the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides"
#15b: "My Jolly Sailor Bold" Full version, w/lyrics
~.~ Lyrics ~.~
Upon one summer's morning, I carelessly did stray, Down by the Walls of Wapping, where I met a sailor gay, Conversing with a bouncing lass, who seem'd to be in pain, Saying, William, when you go, I fear you will ne'er return again.
His hair it does in ringlets hang, his eyes as black as sloes, May happiness attend him wherever he goes, From Tower Hill, down to Blackwall, I will wander, weep and moan, All for my jolly sailor bold, until he does return.
My father is a merchant—the truth I now will tell, And in great London City in opulence doth dwell, His fortune doth exceed ₤300,000 in gold, And he frowns upon his daughter, 'cause she loves a sailor bold.
A fig for his riches, his merchandize, and gold, True love is grafted in my heart; give me my sailor bold: Should he return in poverty, from o'er the ocean far, To my tender bosom, I'll fondly press my jolly tar.
My sailor is as smiling as the pleasant month of May, And oft we have wandered through Ratcliffe Highway, Where many a pretty blooming girl we happy did behold, Reclining on the bosom of her jolly sailor bold.
Come all you pretty fair maids, whoever you may be Who love a jolly sailor bold that ploughs the raging sea, While up aloft, in storm or gale, from me his absence mourn, And firmly pray, arrive the day, he home will safe return.
My name it is Maria, a merchant's daughter fair, And I have left my parents and three thousand pounds a year, My heart is pierced by Cupid, I disdain all glittering gold, There is nothing can console me but my jolly sailor bold.
For the record, those are Sirens, not Mermaids. I guess film producers do not understand the difference but, Mermaids around the world are insulted at the association. I imagine the Sirens feel the same way.
#16: "Tribute" Tenacious D Jack Black and Kyle Glass
"This is not the best song in the world. This is just a Tribute."
#17: "Dragula" by, Rob Zombie
~.~ Lyrics ~.~
Dead I am the one, Exterminating son Slipping through the trees, strangling the breeze Dead I am the sky, watching angels cry While they slowly turn, conquering the worm
Dig through the ditches, And burn through the witches I slam in the back of my Dragula
Dig through the ditches, Burn through the witches I slam in the back of my Dragula
Dead I am the pool, spreading from the fool Weak and want you need, nowhere as you bleed Dead I am the rat, feast upon the cat Tender is the fur, dying as you purr
Dig through the ditches, And burn through the witches I slam in the back of my Dragula
Dig through the ditches, And burn through the witches I slam in the back of my Dragula
Do it baby, Do it baby Do it baby, Do it baby Burn like an animal
Dead I am the life, dig into the skin Knuckle crack the bone, 21 to win Dead I am the dog, hound of hell you cry Devil on your back, I can never die
Dig through the ditches, And burn through the witches I slam in the back of my Dragula
Dig through the ditches, And burn through the witches I slam in the back of my Dragula
Do it baby, Do it baby Do it baby, Do it baby Burn like an animal
Dig through the ditches, And burn through the witches I slam in the back of my Dragula
Dig through the ditches, And burn through the witches I slam in the back of my Dragula
Dig through the ditches, And burn through the witches I slam in the back of my Dragula
#18: "Red Right Hand" By Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
This one ought to sound familiar to anyone familiar with pretty much ANY of the "Scream" movie series, and was also included in an X-Files episode. I can't really claim to be a Scream fan but the X-Files were awesome in all the right ways. One of the best thriller series to ever make it on television, hands down, "Red" or otherwise. When it comes to "Scream" though, I'm sorry if you are a fan but, I felt like I was just sitting in front of the screen, waiting for the next person to die...
#19 "Possum Kingdom" By The Toadies
Based upon an urban legend about a murder case that occurred around Hell's Gate Dam at the Possum Kingdom Lake in Texas. With names that spooky cool, something nefarious HAD to happen there, right? Well, that's the thing about urban legends. Looking for the facts just ruins a good story.

youtu.be/MubibClfoCMI want to jump back to the artist Heather Dale that I featured as #2 in this playlist with her contribution of "Mordred's Lullaby" from the "Avalon" CD. Heather is best known as a Modern Celtic musician who writes and performs original songs based on Britain's King Arthur legends, Irish and Celtic mythology, and Medieval and Renaissance themes. I have long had a fondness for this style of music and regard Heather as one of the best around. While I enjoy listening to her most any time of year, some of her subjects seem to niche in rather nicely with an All-Hallows-Eve theme. "The Morrigan" (posted below) is one such example of that, for reasons I will explain later. If you are interested in this style of music too, you can find more of Heather's work on her website, heatherdale.com/, and her Youtube channel, www.youtube.com/user/heatherdalemusic
#21a: "The Morrigan" By Heather Dale
The Morrigan: Celtic Raven Goddess. The Morrigan, also known as the Morrigu, was the shape-shifting Celtic Goddess of War, Fate and Death. She also presided over rivers, lakes and fresh water, in addition to being the patroness of revenge, night, magic, prophecy, priestesses and witches.
#21b - Bonus Feature: "Morrigan" An animated mini-documentary by Emily Clarkson
Did any of you "Villagers and Heroes" players notice anything familiar about this film?
As long as I'm on the topic, how about another Celtic tune by Heather Dale, before we move on to other things. This time we will commemorate a magical creature you are probably more familiar with. That pretty young girl who kept a stone garden full of male admirers. Perhaps you would know her better as... Medusa.
#22: "Medusa" By Heather Dale
I have a confession. I like Alice, as in, "Alice in Wonderland". As a kid, I liked the original Alice from the pen of Lewis Carroll, despite the fact that she was naive and innocent beyond belief. I even liked the sanitized, teen version of Walt Disney's imagination, even though at that point she had been boiled down to little more than an empty-headed pretty, wandering through a Wonderland that posed less hazard than a daycare center. I have outgrown that early introduction to a great degree, even though I confess to having reread the series as an adult.
Now? Now things are a little different. I no longer like Alice; I LOVE her (in a strictly platonic way of course). It's not so much that I have changed. I am Wednesday, after all <wink>. It's more a matter of Alice herself has changed. I was first introduced to the "new" Alice on a PC video game called "American McGee's Alice". McGee envisioned Alice as an older, less naive, slightly gothy, and more than a little psychotic late teen that faced a twisted Wonderland full of hazard and mind bending adventure.
Since my exposure to this rather awesome game, there has been a plethora of darkly twisted Alice remakes in all forms of entertainment. They range from the slightly quirky to the downright macabre. The only resemblance they share with that long ago Alice of Carroll's creation are time and place. They do however share one thing pretty much in common. I love most all of them. Alice has grown from a novelized nursery rhyme to something you should think twice about ever exposing children to in the first place. Frankly, I love the tough, knife wielding, goth clad Alice that takes no crap from the likes of an insane Red Queen, and spits in the Jabberwock's eye. I just can't get enough. Alice is now fit for All-Hallows-Eve, and if Jack does not watch his back, she may well take over the holiday and crown herself Queen. You have been warned.
Now I'm sure that some of you probably disagree with me on this, but there are two things you need to consider. The first is that if you don't think the new Alice measures up in terms of uber-halloweenness, it may be that you simply have not been exposed to enough of it. I can help with that. The second is that this is my thread so, you really don't have a choice but to complain in the comments or just move along. At any rate, if you are still here, you will now be subjected to a quartet of Alice inspired tunes by three different artists that I find worthy of inclusion to an All-Hallows-Eve play list. Now, I'm not entirely heartless so, I do hope you enjoy them, but I'm not so sure how Alice feels.
#23: "Butterfly" (Lyrics) By Rachel Rose Mitchell
"Formaldehyde ensures that you will stay the same."
In case you failed to notice, I'm jumping back again to a previously featured artist. Rachael Rose Mitchell was first added to this play list back on track #03 with a an original tune called "Thorns". Just another reason I have become fond of Alice is that she has introduced me to the likes of artists like this.
One more Rachel Rose Mitchell. Just one. I promise. Humor me.#24: "Hey Alice" (Lyrics) By Rachel Rose Mitchell
~.~ Lyrics ~.~
Hey Alice, where's your wonderland now that you're back on Earth? How does it look, now you've left it behind and crossed the stepping stones? Hey Alice, is it greener here or does it seem like dirt? Does it feel the same, can you say that you are happy to be home?
The rabbit seems to call your name. You're late, so it's time to move. Oh Alice, you know it's your fate. Tick, tock. No time to lose.
Did the mushrooms make you grow? Did the flowers say hello? Would Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee care to sing a song for me? Did you like your Unbirthday? Did the Cheshire Cat smile your way? Can you tell a raven from a writing desk? Was the Hatter's tea the best? Did you do as the Queen asked? Did you see through the looking glass?
Hey Alice, do you want to play? The Queen's great (or so it's been said)! Hey Alice, can you play croquet? If you're good, you can keep your head.
Hey Alice, are you here or there or somewhere in between? Hey Alice, would you ever dare to go back through where you've been? Hey Alice, time is running short. This can't take too long. Make a choice now. On which side of the door do you feel you belong?
The rabbit seems to call your name. You're late, so it's time to move. Oh Alice, you know it's your fate. Tick, tock. No time to lose.
Did the mushrooms make you grow? Did the flowers say hello? Would Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee care to sing a song for me? Did you like your Unbirthday? Did the Cheshire Cat smile your way? #25: "Mad Hatter" (Lyric Video) SONG: Mad Hatter ARTIST: Melanie Martinez ALBUM: Cry Baby CLIPS: Alice, Madness Returns (PC Game)
"All the best people are crazy"
My last Alice inspired piece. I know, I'm sad also. Layla Littlenymph tells me that THIS will soon be the theme song for her Facebook Character Page. I think it suits her. What do you think?
#26: Cheshire Kitten (We're All Mad Here) By SJ Tucker
"If I leave my grin behind, remind me, we're all mad here, and it's okay"
~.~ Lyrics ~.~
I grew up seeing things a little differently, appearing, disappearing, hardly innocent, nor tied down to the ground. I learned to roll and tumble with the punches, glory in my stripes and spots walk by invisible and never make a sound
But heavy is the crown that's always hidden tender is the heart you never see hard and fast shines the grin that we flash, but there's a vulnerable stripe or two on me. Maybe any place outside of Wonderland is not for me, my friend.
If I leave my grin behind, remind me that we're all mad here and it's okay. Sun up, sun down the shadows hide me down in Wonderland, Wonderland, nobody knows the way, but if you find it in your dreams, you can find it at your dayjob somewhere south of Hell Take the path to left or right with just your gut to guide you the story is not for anyone else to tell. Go down the rabbit hole and out the other side you can't go home in the middle of the magic carpet ride you gotta greet the sun before his lovely daughter moon you can't forsake the journey for the safety of your room until you learn your lesson well.
I have learned to see and hear everybody loud and clear but the truth comes out in riddles that are safe enough to share that's how it is in songs, you see, and stripes always look good on me whether or not I'm really there (smile hangs in the air) But heavy is the burden of the wise ones when no one understands a word they say the Jabberwock never bothered anyone, but nobody believes him to this day and why should they?
If I leave my grin behind, remind me we're all mad here and it's ok. Sun up, sun down the shadows find me out in Wonderland, Wonderland, nobody knows the way but if you find it in your dreams, you can find it at your dayjob somewhere south of Hell Take the path to left or right with just your gut to guide you the story's not for anyone else to tell. You gotta go down the rabbit hole and out the other side you can't go home in the middle of the magic carpet ride you gotta greet the sun before his lovely daughter moon you can't forsake the journey for the safety of your room until you learn your lesson well.
Is it the stripes or the spots you see? Was it hearts or diamonds, baby, led you here to me? Darling, you know better than to trust a pack of cards! What have we learned, the world is never as mad as it could be.
If I leave my grin behind, remind me we're all mad here and it's ok!
Back to the (un)usual fare with this light-hearted nod at one of the creepiest movies of all time, "Pet Semetary".
#27a: "Pet Sematary" By The Ramones
~.~ Lyrics ~.~
Under the arc of a weather stain boards, Ancient goblins, and warlords, Come out of the ground, not making a sound, The smell of death is all around, And the night when the cold wind blows, No one cares, nobody knows.
[CHORUS] I don't want to be buried in a Pet Sematary, I don't want to live my life again, I don't want to be buried in a Pet Sematary, I don't want to live my life again.
Follow Victor to the sacred place, This ain't a dream, I can't escape, Molars and fangs, the clicking of bones, Spirits moaning among the tombstones, And the night, when the moon is bright, Someone cries, something ain't right.
The moon is full, the air is still, All of a sudden I feel a chill, Victor is grinning, flesh rotting away, Skeletons dance, I curse this day, And the night when the wolves cry out, Listen close and you can hear me shout.
#27b - Bonus Feature: "Pet Semetary" (Original 1989 Trailer) Paramount Movies
"After moving to an idyllic home in the countryside, life seems perfect for the Creed family...but not for long. Louis and Rachel Creed and their two young children settle in to a house that sits next door to a pet cemetery - built on an ancient Indian burial ground. Their mysterious new neighbor, Jud Crandall (Fred Gwynne), hides the cemetery's darkest secret...until a family tragedy brings the secret to life. Now, an unthinkable evil is about to be resurrected. From STEPHEN KING, the Master of the Macabre, comes a journey that leads to hell and back. Though not everyone survives the trip. For the Creeds, home is where the horror is."
#28: Welcome to my Nightmare (Lyrics) By Alice Cooper
You "Nightmare on Elm Street" fans out to find this one familiar. Sweet dreams, now......
#29: Dream Warriors By Dokken
#30: Hellraiser By Motörhead Motörhead's official music video for 'Hellraiser', containing clips from the movie by the same name.
And finally, the song that I probably should have lead off with instead of ending with, because it IS Halloween, not Almost Halloween.
#31: It's Almost Halloween By Panic! At The Disco
~.~ WISHING YOU A SPOOKTACULAR HALLOWEEN! ~.~
