Has "Ice Age: Collision Course" (Ice Age 5) Jumped The Shark?
Short Answer: Yes!
But does that mean you should give it a pass?
I'll leave that up to you...
When I saw the first promo pop up for Ice Age 5, my first thought was 5? Seriously? Wow, I guess I really lost track of this series. Not surprising I guess since the first Ice Age premiered back in 2002.
Curious pixie that I am, I did a search back on the movies in the order of production, just to catch up a little. I eventually caught up to date, thinking where could this series go from here?
Where indeed... Oh, ummm... Where you ask? Is there anywhere left for this series to go? If so, how far?
Short Answer: Space.
Yes, that's right; space. I gotta admit, I'm fairly imaginative, but even I did not see this one coming. How about I let Fox and Blue Sky take it from here...
Scrat's epic pursuit of the elusive acorn catapults him into the universe where he accidentally sets off a series of cosmic events that transform and threaten the Ice Age World. To save themselves, Sid, Manny, Diego, and the rest of the herd must leave their home and embark on a quest full of comedy and adventure, travelling to exotic new lands and encountering a host of colorful new characters.
Release date: July 22, 2016 (USA)
Director: Mike Thurmeier
Film series: Ice Age

Ice Age: Collision Course | "Cosmic Scrat-tastrophe" Animated Short [HD] | FOX Family
Scrat journeys where no ICE AGE character has gone before in COSMIC SCRAT-TASTROPHE. The consequences of Scrat’s antics are always momentous, and this time he’s creating his own version of the Big Bang – and a cosmic “Scrat-tastrophe” that could have huge consequences for Ice Age herd…and the rest of the world. Showing in 2D and 3D exclusively with The Peanuts Movie, in theaters on November 6th.

ICE AGE: COLLISION COURSE, opening in theaters everywhere July 22, 2016, stars Ray Romano, Denis Leary, John Leguizamo, Queen Latifah, Seann William Scott, Josh Peck, Simon Pegg, Keke Palmer, Wanda Sykes, and Jennifer Lopez. Also starring Stephanie Beatriz, Adam DeVine, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Max Greenfield, Jessie J, Nick Offerman, Melissa Rauch, Michael Strahan, Neil de Grasse Tyson.
I will be perfectly honest when I tell you that when the first image loaded showing a prehistoric squirrel (Scrat) planting an acorn on an asteroid, my first thought was that this series has finally jumped the shark. Does it look cute? yeah. Funny? Yeah. Entertaining? No doubt. That said, sometimes a little out there is just a little too far...
Perhaps I'm being a little too critical. It is entertainment after all, and animated entertainment at that. But where do we go from here? Ice Age meets the aliens? I had always assumed that if this series went on long enough, it would eventually wind up with humans in it. Perhaps that will be the case one day, but I can't help but wonder how you can get there now after coming here... to space. But enough of my thoughts. Is the new Ice Age something you would watch? Are you looking forward to it, or has it simply gone too far to hold your interest. I'll leave that up for you to say, and leave you with a few trailers to perhaps help you make up your mind.
Enjoy, and let me know what you think, below.
