Ranger my main and one I generally recommend to anyone getting started in this game. As the name would suggest have a lot long range attacks few short range. For your free to play options you got a longbow, shortbow and trowing axe on land to attack from a distance. Only one real short range weapon actually a greatsword. Even just a regular sword isn't really short range it's more a medium range weapon. Off hand you can use an axe, dagger, torch and warhorn. Underwater they use harpoon guns and spears.
Also they use pets in combat you only need 2 that you can use in land and 2 that can be used underwater. Good way to collect extra pets in to take the tour through the 6 major cities look for animals that are labeled Juvenile in green to charm. This gets you pets for your pet swap when one is too hurt to fight. Pets have different skills for your function 2 key "F2" other profession-specific abilities don't change.
Utilities groups are signets which I use a lot, spirits, traps, pet commands and um what you call the rest I don't use them much at all clearly.
New in Heart of Thorns is the Druid Ranger they learn to use a staff as a long range weapon and I've heard your ranger could charm new pets for your pet collection.
In Free Realms terms Ranger is like an Archer, Ninja, Medic combination for anyone new to the game and playing for free. With Heart of Thorns upgrade you got a little bit of Wizard thrown in.

They changed the sword for ranger it is less wild easier to control which also takes away a huge advantage rangers had before for any that could control the game character well. I been using a great sword more for this reason more fitting with my fighting style.
