The Dares were formed by twin brothers Ben Peterson and Matt Peterson. Originally from Vermont, The Dares began performing in California in 2004 after settling in Whittier, CA. For those of us that enjoy gaming, the Dares are known for performing the hit them "It's Your World" for Free Realms, a game by the late, great, company of SOE (Sony Online Entertainment), perhaps best known for the EverQuest franchise, now known as Daybreak Games.

Finally, A version of It's Your World posted posted to YouTube by Zadira Kindleriver. This Video was posted in October of 2010, in order to promote the opening of the fan site, mysticmayhem.net. Mystic Mayhem was a fan site for the game Free Realms, and was created by the mother daughter team of Zadira Kindleriver, and Rtephani Rabbitheart, with help from Darian Spirithorn. Mystic Mayhem was the home site for the <Mystic Mayhem> guild, created by Zadira and Stephani, with help from Ty Swordprince, and began on this very host, Proboards. The site changed name to Free Realms Mayhem in order to more closely associate with the game, and went independent at that time. With the "sunset" of Free Realms, the site once again changed its name to Legends of Mayhem, and continued to run for almost two years with Ravix Burly (Ravix) as its administrator. This site, Mystic Adventures, is not a continuation of the original Mystic Mayhem that was conceived by Zadira and Stephani, but its founders are from the original staff and members of mysticmayhem.net. We harbor fond memories of Mystic Mayhem, and are pleased to be around for members from that community, the gaming community of Free Realms, as well as gaming and entertainment buffs from all walks. This video contains footage from in game, and if you watch closely you may even spot a certain little nymph that had a habit of worming her way into a variety of game videos. Enjoy.

Brings back so many Free Realms memories. Are they still together and making music? I was not aware of any show dates past 2013, and had assumed the band had broken up. A little research however turned up the bands Facebook page, with a show date listed for the 29th of this month. While they do not appear to be nearly as active as they once were, it would seem that they are still out there with two of the original three members still on board, and have even managed to put out some new work. I was a little surprised at that, but by no means shocked. Despite having been around for some years now, the members are still rather young (early 20's) and the familial connection probably served to keep them together when other groups would have drifted apart. I will try to post some of their more recent work later if I can get my hands on something freely distributed. I do not normally give out FB pages, but recent info on this band is a bit hard to come by, so I will post it for those that are interested. www.facebook.com/thedaresI was going to include a bio as part of the OP, but had trouble pulling up anything beyond 2013 aside from the bands FB page and Twitter account. For the record, do not waste your time looking them up on Twitter. The Twitter account is not updated very often, and contains nothing that is not also included on FB. Of the bios I was able to dig up, these were the two best. While both are a little dated, they are still interesting for the background info alone.
Originally posted on My Play. Not dated. Original author unknown. When most bands tell you they’ve had to “grow up in public,” they’re talking about getting pushed into the spotlight before they’ve had a chance to find their voice. But for Whittier, California, trio The Dares, who started playing when twin brothers and co-founders Ben (guitar/lead vocals) and Matt (drums/vocals) Peterson were all of 8 years old, the idea was a bit more literal. These boys-to-men literally grew up in public, forming a band when their peers were still dabbling in youth-league sports and landing a major-label contract with Jive Records before they’d even finished high school. Today, as the trio’s powerhouse spin on pop-punk tradition is making clear, The Dares are ready and able to grow even bigger.
Make no mistake: While they’re fueled by the same monster hooks and youthful energy that’ve driven The Dares’ music since day one, tunes like the laser-focused, MySpace-dominating lead single “Love Me When I Leave” also prove how much time, practice, and a relentless dedication to their craft have tightened this trio musically. Not only that, but from the down-tuned, breakdown-heavy anthem “The Message” to the beautiful, string-accented ballad “Carpe Diem” (just two of the 100-plus songs in The Dares’ arsenal), the Petersons and bassist/vocalist Martin Lascano are also proving how much they’ve learned to stretch out as songwriters. “If you sat the three of us down and asked us about our influences, it’d probably take us a day to go over all the different music we listen to,” Ben Peterson explains, “One of the reasons we work so well together is that we’ve learned to incorporate all those different ideas without losing ourselves in the process.
Formed in 1998 in Burlington, Vermont, The Dares first got the chance to hone their balancing act before what might be the toughest audience on earth: their elementary-school classmates. Over the next four years, however, it wasn’t just the novelty of their youth that found The Dares’ profile rising. The band’s songwriting prowess and ace showmanship landed them over 100 gigs -- from all-ages shows to the 2002 Winter Olympics Torch Event in Burlington, where they rocked an audience of 10,000 -- as well as frequent newspaper, magazine and TV coverage throughout their area. Not too shabby, considering all of this happened before the band members could legally drive themselves to gigs.
If Vermont saw The Dares becoming regional sensations, then the Petersons’ 2003 move to Whittier set up the band for a full national breakout. In April of 2004, just months after finalizing their lineup with middle-school friend Lascano, the trio made their California debut at a Long Beach battle of the bands, where they beat out 10 other acts to win both the “Best Band” title and a block of studio time. Demos, further accolades (including two “Best Punk Band” nominations at the Orange County Music Awards), and dozens of gigs followed, and over the next three years, The Dares found themselves making repeat visits to Hollywood clubs like the Whiskey, House of Blues, the Key Club and the Viper Room. Looking back at that time in their lives, Martin Lascano adds "we were just three best friends doing the music that we love to do, no labeling of music, no boundaries, just fun.
Now, armed with an arsenal of hit-singles-in-waiting, as well as a groundswell of fan support through avenues such as MySpace, Purevolume and the college/high-school touring circuits they’ve been sweeping of late, The Dares are getting ready to unleash their full-length Jive debut. And as Matt Peterson puts it, you need only consider the road the trio have traveled to see where they’re headed next. “We waited forever just to make it to this point,” he says, “and now that we’re here, it’s like all that energy we’ve had bottled up is ready to come out. We’re ready to play – we’re ready to be everywhere.”
This bio was attributed to Billboard, and supposedly ran in early 2011, but I can not find a copy of it there now. I found it posted on last.fm with a publication date of 05-14-2011, editing by katherinea1492The Dares were formed by twin brothers Ben Peterson (guitar and lead vocals) and Matt Peterson (drums and backup vocals). For six years The Dares performed as a trio with Martin Lascano (bass guitar and vocals) who left the band in April of 2010. Brandon Shapiro, (bass and vocals) and Anthony Aguirre (guitar) joined The Dares in the summer of 2010 and in November of the same year, The Dares teamed up with Grammy award winning producer, Paul Ebersold and recorded their new cd.
The Dares began performing in California in 2004 and have played all the major clubs in Southern California. The Dares were signed to Jive Records in 2007 when the band members were still just 16 years old. So far it has been a very interesting journey for The Dares and they have had a first class experience of the ups and downs of the music business. Performing at the major Hollywood clubs before they could even drive and having to enter and leave through the back doors due to their age; working with Grammy Award winning producers, and touring with major acts have been just some of the highlights for the band. The Dares began working in the summer of 2007 with various producers and after nine months of writing, The Dares began the work on the recording of their debut album with Jive Records. The eleven song CD was produced by Grammy award winning producer Paul Ebersold and David Bendeth. The album was finally completed in the early 2009. Although a release date was not established at the time, The Dares began touring the United States and Canada in the summer of 2009 with established bands such as Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, The Almost, and Cartel. They also completed the video game theme song “It’s Your World” for the Sony Entertainment game “Free Realms” and were the headlining guest act at this year’s NAMM ‘s national high school battle of the bands “School Jam USA.” In January of 2010, when The Dares still couldn’t secure a release date from Jive Records for their cd they requested their release from the label, at which time they began writing the material for their new cd. I will post more as I come across it. ~LL

Wow who would've thought? That'd be cool if they became mainstream again. You don't hear much about them anymore.
