In a recent interview with Massively, V&H devs made mention of new housing options in the works.
Chief among them will be the opportunity to enter and decorate a house, as well as a possibility of crafting housing items to decorate with.
While this falls a little short of the building aspect I have craved ever since the "sunset"of Free Realms, it is a welcome change all the same.

"What’s better than owning a home with a garden? How about a house with an interior! Currently, Villagers & Heroes’ housing system only allows for players to interact with the building for storage as well as provides a buff. However, that’s going to change: During our recent Stream Team episode, Mad Otter CEO Damon Slye surprised viewers with the revelation that plans are in the works to open up the interiors of the homes for players to enter. Not a lot of other details are known at this point, but when the topics of interior decorating and letting players craft furniture on the lathe were raised, Slye called them both “good ideas.” We’ll keep you posted as more information comes out!"

There WILL be a housing update prior to the end of this October, probably in conjunction with the Halloween event zone build. It will not however contain the elements addressed in the post and links above. While the Otters assured me that these items are still being developed, it was decided to push out a somewhat different build to give housing buffs something to satisfy them while the more ambitious elements continue development. The builds focus will also be in a slightly different direction, focused more along the lines of a village update instead of an update specific to housing.

The Village Build.
What does that mean? It means that at long last, villages are getting some much needed love and attention! On the forums, we recently asked our players for their thoughts on what aspects they would most like to see added, or improvements made, to villages in the game. There were so many wonderful suggestions! While we couldn’t fit everything in, we are fairly confident that you all will find much to be happy about.
Here’s a sneak peek at just a few of the things you can expect: In total, there will be 40 new ranks of village projects! We’ve created a number of special brand new projects, as well as increased the ranks of already existing projects. And for those of you itching for more storage options, you will not be disappointed because we’ve added LOTS of new personal vaults. And these are only a few of the things you can look forward to. We’ve a number of other surprises, all of which will be revealed in mid-October when this build goes live!
As a Tester for V&H, I can say that this description falls short of describing everything that will come out with The Village Build, which should find its way in game sometime around mid month of October. Beyond that I am afraid I may not comment. Specific details will be included in the patch notes when they become available. Keep an eye out and we will try to get those notes posted up as soon as they become available.
