Daybreak Games (Formerly SOE) Announces Sunset Date For Its EverQuest Spin-off, Landmark.
In a recent move that seems to be becoming something of a sad tradition with Daybreak games, this notice appeared early last week on The Landmark Forum:
"To the Landmark community,
With heavy hearts, we are writing today to inform you that after much review, we have decided to close Landmark game servers on
February 21, 2017.
Since Landmark first entered Alpha, we have been impressed by the creative talents in this community. You pushed the boundaries of what Landmark could do, and we are grateful for the time and energy you shared through your creations in this game.
While there is still time to enjoy Lumeria and the many worlds you’ve built within Landmark, we wanted to let you know what you will be seeing happen between now and February. Beginning today, Player Studio items will no longer be available for listing or for purchase in the Landmark Marketplace. Landmark will also no longer be available for purchase. All items in the Marketplace with a Daybreak Cash price will have their price reduced to 1 DBC.
The game servers, as well as the accompanying forums and social media channels, will be closed at
4:00PM Pacific Time on Tuesday, February 21, 2017.
We want to thank each and every one of you for your creative contributions to Landmark.

I take no pride in the fact that I predicted this would happen when Daybreak announced its decision to discontinue its years-long development of EQNext. It seemed an obvious outcome in view of the fact that Landmark was never intended to be a stand-alone game in the first place. With the demise of EQNext, is it any surprise that its... prequel [for lack of a better term] should share the same fate? This is simply the continuation of a spiral that began with the sunset of several games, to include Free Realms, and the evolution of SOE into Daybreak Games. The only thing that surprises me at all is the facade that this is a painful decision only recently arrived at by Daybreak games. The fact that Landmark was launched on Steam shortly BEFORE the plans to discontinue EQNext were announced was purely a coincidence... I... think... NOT.
But that's my opinion. An opinion I am not alone in sharing.
I was a huge supporter of SOE for many years but, it was the sunset of Free Realms that first marked the beginning of the "sunset" of my patronage. I was not comfortable with the direction SOE took in its final days and have been even less comfortable with the performance of Daybreak since. This latest move to discontinue Landmark AFTER taking it Live in an unfinished state, and AFTER making its cash shop available to a broader market by launching it on The Steam Network seems like little more than a desperate cash grab at the expense of a hopeful customer base. A cash grab for no other purpose than to lessen the losses that have come as a result of a string of bad decisions by Daybreak games.
I feel somewhat vindicated in my earlier predictions now but, I take no pleasure from it. It is a sad thing. It was sad to lose my favorite game and even sadder when I let my All-Access membership lapse and uninstalled all things Daybreak from my system, to include my second favorite game at that time, Everquest-2.
Yes, I am aware that EverQuest-2 is still going, as is the original EQ, but I have little confidence that will continue to be the case. Even if it is, I have no desire to continue to do business with a company that is seemingly clueless in relation to its customer base. I do not think it is overly harsh to observe that everything Daybreak has touched since taking over for SOE has gone to Ashes. Then again... SOE was pretty much on the same track.
To an older gamer like myself, it seems like it was not that long ago when SOE was in the forefront of the on-line gaming industry. It can not be argued that they were instrumental in making it what it is today, and the EverQuest portfolio, which includes Landmark, was the flagship that made the once-great SOE into a giant of the industry.
Goliath has fallen but, it was not David's stone that took him down. He tripped over his own two feet, and giants have such a long ways to fall. Whether or not that fall will continue remains to be seen but, I'm not planning on being around for the impact.
My condolences to the customer base of all those fine games sunset over the past couple of years and, my gratitude to the former and existing employees of SOE/Daybreak that worked so hard to bring us such wonderful products for such a long time. It is sad that our parting is not on the best of terms but, those of us that have been with you for the long run carry many fond memories. We thank you for all the fun you gave to us and we hope that we played a small part in making your job fun to do.
